Walk as Jesus Walked

Whoever claims to live in him must walk as Jesus did.

1 John 2:6

First John 2:6 is such a short little verse, but with so much to think about.

You know, I fall so far short of walking as Jesus did. But my heart’s desire—my prayer for every believer—is to walk in the way that He walked.

As you think about Jesus’ life here on earth and who He is today, you can’t miss His compassion for people. He wept over Jerusalem, mourning that He wanted to bring them to Himself, but they would not come. He healed the sick and fed the hungry and forgave sin-sick souls. But His primary concern was always a person’s eternal destiny.

This is one of the ways you can walk as Jesus walked: having compassion and concern for those who do not know Him. Scripture says it’s not His will that any should perish but that all should come to repentance. If you’re going to walk the way He walked, you need to be concerned about the things He was concerned about, and He was most concerned about where a person would spend eternity.

Does that compassion of Jesus live in and move your heart, too? Are you concerned about the eternal destiny of your friends, family, neighbors and co-workers? That was the reason Jesus left heaven’s glory to come to earth; He came to die for people who did not even know Him, because He had compassion on all the sheep who had gone astray.

Today, ask the Spirit to give you Jesus’ compassion for those who are still in darkness.

Pit Stop Prayer

Lord Jesus, Your compassion extends even to those who stubbornly reject and oppose You. You wept over the city who refused to recognize You, the city where You would die. You wept at their stubbornness. Grow Your compassion and mercy in me!
